Salary Market Data information for Faculty and Non-Classified Staff
Process
- Each year, the Office of Human Resources and the Office of Institutional Research prepares and submits an annual salary survey for our Non-Classified and Faculty positions to the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR). CUPA-HR maintains one of the largest workforce databases available for higher ed institutions, annually obtains salary data from approximately 1,300 institutions, and has become an industry standard for higher ed compensation and workforce data across the nation. ISU's participation in this survey allows us to benchmark our positions at ISU to our peer groups with up-to-date and comprehensive salary, benefits, and workforce data.
- As part of our CEC planning for FY 2023 (2 years ago), we embarked on a comprehensive review of all non-classified and faculty positions to align them with our CUPA position data by discipline (area of focus) and rank (or position description/duties) in order to arrive at a salary market comparison rate for each ISU faculty and non-classified staff position. This review of each position was conducted collaboratively by HR and division/college-level leadership to determine appropriate market comparisons utilizing a consistent methodology across all positions and departments.
- We are now in our third year of utilizing a consistent approach to determine equitable market rates based on salary survey data as part of our annual merit process, and these data are utilized throughout the year to inform hiring decisions, unit reorganizations and job analyses, as well as equity and retention efforts. Each year we are making improvements in our processes and continuing to educate the campus community regarding this relatively new and much more comprehensive and consistent approach to market equity for faculty and non-classified staff.
- ISU HR and division/college-level leadership have a process in place to annually capture relevant updates to roles/positions to ensure appropriate alignment with comparison groups. Unit and leadership context are essential for checking and reviewing these updated salary comparison data on an annual basis to check for job changes, new hires, or other reorganization efforts.
- It is important to note that the comparison group salaries are a snapshot in time from reporting institutions and may vary from year to year.
- Our aim is to apply consistent data sources and methodology across all positions and disciplines relevant to the higher ed industry:
- For non-classified positions, matches to the CUPA positions are intended to group similar positions together by specific functional area, such as academic or student services, facilities management, human resources, administration, information technology, athletics, etc.
- For faculty positions, matches are based on the primary appointment according to discipline and faculty rank
Salary Comparison Groups
ISU utilizes a primary peer group for our salary comparisons (ISU+ Peer Group), which comprises 17 institutions across our region including our designated peer institutions, in-state peer institutions, and other relevant institutions of similar size and scope such as Boise State University, New Mexico State University, University of Colorado, Utah State University, and others. If there is not a match to a position among this peer group, the next comparison groups are utilized. A full list of our current comparison groups utilized for this data are found below:

For a few specific occupational disciplines within the State of Idaho, including health and technology, additional industry comparisons are utilized from the Idaho Department of Labor Occupational Employment & Wages Survey. These comparisons are rare and exceptional, and are determined collaboratively with leadership and HR to determine the most appropriate comparisons depending upon rank, disciple, and role.
Salary Surveys
ISU participates and utilizes data from the following CUPA Salary Surveys:
- Administrators Survey - collects data for positions with primary assignments requiring management of the institution or a customarily recognized division within it. The administrator positions reported for this survey are typical of those found in colleges and universities. Before reporting data, position descriptions are reviewed and matched based upon position description content, rather than job title only. The positions in the Administrators Survey include Top Executive Officers, Senior Institutional & Chief Functional Officers, and Academic Deans.
- Professionals Survey - collects data for 'functional professional' positions with primary assignments and responsibilities requiring professional-level expertise and work in a specific functional area, such as academic or student services, facilities management, human resources, information technology, athletics, etc. Positions covered include those with supervisory duties that do not represent the majority of their time and effort. Positions generally require at least a baccalaureate degree or equivalent in the field and may require a terminal degree and/or professional licensure in the field. The professional positions reported for this survey are typical of those found in colleges and universities. Before reporting data, position descriptions are reviewed and matched based upon position description content, rather than job title only. The positions in the Professionals Survey are grouped into the following broad categories/functional areas:

- Institutional Affairs
- Research, Statisticians and Data Scientists, and Health Science and Environmental Sustainability Professionals
- Student Affairs
- Faculty Survey - collects data for full-time faculty positions by instructional programs based on the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP). Data reported includes annualized 9 month salary, tenure type, and faculty rank.
